How the Watch Time Formula Works

YouTube measures watch time in minutes and aggregates them into public watch hours. The mathematical formula used by this calculator is:

Total Watch Hours = (Videos × Views × Video Duration in Minutes × (Retention % ÷ 100)) ÷ 60

For example, if you publish 10 videos that each average 10,000 views, an average length of 8 minutes, and a retention rate of 50% (4 minutes watched per viewer), you generate 666.7 watch hours.

Tips to Reach 4,000 Watch Hours Faster

  • Hook viewers in the first 30 seconds to prevent drop-off and boost average view percentage.
  • Target 8 to 12-minute long videos: Longer videos allow more total minutes watched per click while maintaining high pacing.
  • Organize bingeable playlists: Use end screens and cards to funnel viewers from one video directly to the next.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do YouTube Shorts count toward the 4,000 watch hours?

No. Public watch hours from YouTube Shorts played from the Shorts feed do not count toward the 4,000 long-form watch hours requirement. Shorts have a separate threshold of 10 million public Shorts views in 90 days.

What happens after 12 months?

YouTube calculates watch hours on a rolling 365-day basis. Any watch hours earned more than 365 days ago drop off your total eligibility count.
